Odd Legged Jenny :: Band Bios

Alex grew up moving between England, Scotland and the United States. She has been called a limey, yank, crumpet, brit and scottie which has led to her foreigner psyche, an attachment to music of wanderers, and varied approaches to Irish, Old Time and gypsy music. Alex has played with many of her musical heroes, including her students, and plans on playing with the rest of her living mentors. She has performed up and down the east coast and on various street corners and pubs, as well as in the United Kingdom and West Africa. She currently sings and plays fiddle and guitar in Odd Legged Jenny and lead fiddle and vocals in the gypsalachian group Las Gitanas. Alex has been praised for her fluid style of fiddling and her choice of musical material; however her all-time favorite compliment comes from a mechanic who told her that she takes real good care of her car. She believes that nothing is more important for music than supporting a local arts scene and teaching traditional material.

Phil first cut his musical teeth on the 1960’s Folk revival movement, until the British Invasion lured him away on a musical journey that led him from Washington DC to Argentina and back. Since then, he has played solo and/or joined or formed a variety of bands performing everything from Blues to Country to classic Rock and Roll. Something of a jack of all trades (and master of none), Phil has also been a Radio News Director, a feature writer, a photographer, a cattle farmer, an innkeeper, and a ski instructor. He returned to his musical roots when he formed the Traditional Irish Music band, the Ryegrass Rollers in 2001 which released the critically acclaimed C-D Rue the Day in 2003. Now, he and fiddler Alex Caton have branched out to form the duo, Odd Legged Jenny (née Crooked Road), playing music from both sides of the Atlantic.

Lew grew up in Virginia. He ran away when he was 22 and ran back when he was 23. His mind tends to wander, his mouth tends to run, and he's under the illusion he suffers from no illusions. Please don't bust his bubble.

He started playing bass because he was tall, and kept playing bass because he was told not to. He's worked in several rock bands from LA to Virginia (but nowhere in between) and has most recently joined a jazz quartet and Las Gitanas, as well as OLJ.

In this age of Google, unique band names are tough to come by. So we named ourselves after Jenny: there is, after all, only one in the world. She is a stool that Alex's dad christened many years back: < Insert Jenny story, how she got her odd leg, here? >

When not on stage, Jenny enjoys wobbling, developing new squeaks, and riding locked inside a trunk.
